Chapter Nine

“He knows what you’re going to ask of him. He also knows he won’t be coming home!”

Steve had calls into every staffer of President Hernandez that he could find, but the president wasn’t taking calls. He grabbed his coat and jumped in his car at Quantico and decided the best thing he could do was make a run for the White House; he knew he could get in, but he didn’t know if he could get to the president with John’s instructions. He jumped onto Interstate 95 north headed for Washington. He merged off the 95 onto George Washington Parkway and crossed into D.C. by way of the Arlington Bridge, passing the Lincoln Memorial on his left as he headed down Constitution Avenue. Traffic was unusually heavy for eight-thirty in the evening, so he cut up 17th Street north until he got to the Eisenhower National Office Building next door to the White House and parked. He ran through the grounds to one of several Pennsylvania Avenue entrances. He scanned his credentials and was buzzed through and onto the grounds. When he finally made it to the entrance to the West Wing, he was out of breath and dragging his ass through the doors. Secret Service okayed him, and he was given the highest level security ID, which he flung over his neck as he made his way to Daly’s office.
